ESCI/AIRFIX 1/48th Scale SAAB JA-37 Viggen, Final Reveal

Wow, you did magnificent on this! That truly looks the part and is an amazing model! Way to go man!

Just a slight update on the Viggen. I painted the AIM-9 Sidewinder rails flat white, as indicated in actual photos. I also finished the launch rails for the AIM-120 AMRAAM's, which came from a Kinetic F-16 kit as did the missiles themselves. Photos showed those rails to be painted in a shade close to Light Ghost Grey so I sprayed them with the Model Master enamel variant of that shade and them hit them with a wash of mineral spirits and Burnt Umber Oil Paint. Almost ready to put it all together and flat coat.

THE ESCI/Airfix JA-37 Viggen is done. The clear parts fit perfectly although I did have to shave a few millimeters off the front of the windscreen. The Neomega ejection seat also fit fine in the cockpit tub. I did add some maps to the instrument panel cover and I also had to fabricate two new blade antenna for the spine as this was a later JA- version which featured the different antenna configuration. The spine beacon light came from the Cutting Edge Nav light set which I picked up years ago. I also added an air sensor to the front of the vertical stab which was made from a piece of metal. The plane was given a flat coat of Testors Dull-Cote which was thinned with Metalizer thinner. The plane depicted is a JA-37 Viggen from the 171st Squadron of the Swedish Air Force. Although this kit was first fielded by ESCI in 1978 it still holds up well and the only major mod was adding the fuselage plug to depict the longer JA- version.
