I have been reading the excellent book "Rising Sun, Falling Skies" about the Allies' Singapore/Phillipines/Java fiasco in '41-'42 and I got inspired to do a build from those battles. Plus, I wanted to have an easy side project going, too. Being a fan of under-dog fighters like the Buffalo, P-36, P-39, P-40 etc., I chose the reissued Tamiya 1/48th scale Buffalo kit. My plan is to depict a Dutch Air Force Buffalo from the Java/Singapore campaign and I will be using Aeromaster Decals. The plane I will be depicting is a B339C from the Netherlands East Indies Army Air Corps flown by Kapt. Van Heisdingen who was killed in March of 1942. Reference material on the Dutch B339's was a lot easier to come by then the RAF ones, especially when it came to the camo and interior colors. Most sources indicate the Dutch Brewsters had silver interiors so I went with Vallejo Aluminum after I primered all the parts. Looking forward to this one so stay tuned. Regards, Ian

Thanks, guys! Although certainly not a thoroughbred racehorse, I always liked how the Buffalo looked.
Best wishes,
Ian

Thanks, gents. Boots, you are correct as the Buffalo was supposed to succeed the F3F and early F4F Wildcat variants but it ended up being rendered obsolete fairly quickly. The F4F and the P-40 had to hold the line in the U.S. arsenal until the Hellcats and Corsairs arrived.

Ian

I got some bench time in on the Tamiya Buffalo and I started work on the interior. As I stated before there is alot more research material out there on the Dutch interior and exterior Buffalo colors than the RAF version (for whatever reason) and the info seems pretty clear these had silver lacquer interiors. Based on that I went with the excellent Vallejo Aluminium and got the interior sprayed. I then added the interior sidewall parts and accented them with a heavy wash of Pledge Floor Wax diluted with Acryl Flat Black. (A little trick I learned from Finescale decades ago and to this day still makes one of the best washes for seats and cockpits because it dries with a feathered edge). The Tamiya cockpit is really detailed so the interior will be OOB except for some straps. Best wishes, Ian

Well gents, I am going to put this one on the back burner for now. After I closed the fuselage up, I realized that the plane has open wheel wells and Tamiya provides none of the internal structure above the wheels. Also, all the internal seams can be seen with the wheels down. My options are to either construct some rudimentary compartment detail and install it from the wheel holes or depict the plane in a flying state with the wheels up and a pilot. I am leaning towards the latter, however I will need a decent pilot figure and some clear sheet stock to make three spinning prop blades with the blurred effect. Since I wanted to do an easy WW2 prop fighter build I am going to set this aside and pick another project that won't require as much work for right now.
Best wishes,
Ian
