Hi All Well, as promised the day has come where I make the transition to becoming a true armour modeller…..The Tiger. I’ve decided to start with the Tiger 1 to leave further variations to model. Even though I’m currently on a week’s break away from home, I still have managed to sneak some modelling time. We’re staying in a bach (holiday home) by the beach, I’ve only been able to bring limited kit/tools. So it’s mostly going to being removing from sprues, clean up and dry fitting. Still, better than nothing. The kit I’m building is the Dragon Sd.Kfz.181 Tiger 1 Late Production (6253). It’s a 3 in 1 kit and I’ve decided to build the Command Vehicle variant. In addition I have purchased the Voyager Model PE upgrade kit, A DEF Model Zimmerit set, Ammo – Tool Clamps for Tiger Tanks and an Aber Barrel and muzzle (On the way). Will post pics when I can. Got the first few hours in on the kit today and have really enjoyed how good the quality of the kit is. There is minimal clean up required and very few ejection pin and casting lines. I felt that the moulded weld lines are not prominent enough so I’ve removed them using a 2mm modelling chisel and smoothed out. I will use Tamiya quick type epoxy to create new ones. I’ve also added flame cuts where appropriate as they are not created as part of the kit. If the rest of the kit goes together as well, then it will be a great introduction to Tigers. As I was modelling today, the William Blake poem Tyger came up in my mind. So I thought I’d have a bit of fun and rewrite the first verse. Don’t think the Poet Laurette will be losing any sleep…lol Tiger Tiger firing bright In Normandy to start a fight Creaking, screeching mechanically Thy fearful symmetry will make them flee Anyway, here's a couple of pics I managed to take. Cheers Mark

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yes, it's true that I'm a Tiger virgin. It's also my first ever tank build and what a beauty to start on. Is it true that they reckon that you always remember where you were the first time you built a Tiger??? Can you believe that it was actually the wife who suggested I bring some modelling stuff with us. We're having a week away at a beach house in a beautiful bay in an area of the Coromandel which is in the North Island of NZ. There's no internet so it's very much a chilled break with lots of reading, dozing, eating and beach walks with the dogs. And of course the odd bit of modelling (would be rude not too). It's the perfect option when we can't head overseas for the foreseeable future. Will hopefully get a bit more done today so standby for updates. Happy Modelling. Cheers Mark

Great kit choice to kick off your Tiger build fella.
And I do remember my first Tiger, it was the old Tamiya kit in later 70’s. I painted it 100% white!

Hi All, forgive me fellow modellers, for I have sinned. It's been three months since my last post. Had the fun of everyday life and a new job to contend with so modelling has had to take a back seat. Plus when I have been getting to do some I haven't been taking any pics of progress sorry. Over the last few weeks I've assembled the main body of the tank, the turret and the barrel. Everything was primed with a new laquer product from SMS in Aussie. The a base coat of Tamiya FX-88 German Yellow.Next was the camo - Tamiya FX-89 and FX-90. I was in a number of minds in how to do it. Camo putty, masking or free-hand. I'd never done anything like this before at 1/35. I had done the camo on the 1/24 Typhoon and that seemed a lot easier in comparison. Anyway I bit the bullet and went for it. I used Tamiya laquer thinner as I read that it helps with flow through the airbrush. So,,,,,,,,, after the initial panic of the first camo pattern, i settled down and learned to love overspray, even though I was spraying at a very low PSI. After both colours were done, I followed a tip I found on YT. I diluted the base yellow colour about 90/10 with laquer thinner and went in a sharpened up the edges. Then the whole model was given a dusting with the diluted mix to tone evrything down and give it a dusty appearence. Here's some pics of my first go at German Tri-camo.

Hi All Had another good day of modelling time and made some good progress. All of the tools and the side steel rigging have been completed and fixed on to the main body. Happy with most of the finishes, but the wooden handles still need some more practice, but I'll take it for a first go. At the end I couldn't resist throwing the wheels on one side and the turret on to have a check on progress. It's starting to look liek a real Tiger now. Cheers Mark

Certainly looking like a Tiger to me . That damage on the skirting is bloody well done Hi Paul Thanks for the feedback. The skirts are thin strips of brass which I've dealt to with pliers and scissors. I really wanted to give it a beaten up look, like it's had a really hard paper round. Cheers Mark
