Hi All Well I finally pulled my finger out and started on the diorama for the Tiger Tank. It was also my first opportunity to test drive my hot wire cutter and luckily I had a heap of closed cell packaging polystyrene. After a bit of measuring, cutting and gluing the main base was created. Then I tried out the kitty to get a feel for the composition. The idea is that the season has chnaged and the first snowfalls have happened. The ground is getting wet so the heavy kitty has been parked up to get it's winter coat. Being so heavy I want to give the impression that the Kitty has sunk down. Then I grabbed the figures and played around with some composition. I have cut basswood pieces to create a tidy frame around the poly block. Not sure yet if I will stain it or paint it black, jury is still out. That's all for now, have a great day / evening whereever you are. Cheers Mark

So after almost taking a break this evening, I decided that calling from the workshop was too strong, so I left SWMBO watching Strictly rerun and nipped out. Yesterday i'd glued the basswood frame on so the first job was to remove the clamps. There's a little bit of filling and sanding to be done to fix up the corners, but on the whole it looks good. Next job was out with the air dried clay. I'd previously put on a basing coat of PVA glue onto the poly surface to give the clay something to bite onto. I like to roll out the clay as thin as possible and then add it to the base. I find that keeping it thin reduces the amount of potential cracking. But with the ground cover and mud that will be going on it won't be too much of a deal if i do get some. So enough words here's some pics of the finished result. It's now tucked up in the shed to dry overnight. That's me for tonight, until next time. Happy modelling Cheers Mark

Grand work. Do you need to do anything to prevent shrinkage so the tracks still fit neatly in the ruts?

Grand work. Do you need to do anything to prevent shrinkage so the tracks still fit neatly in the ruts? I probably wont rely on those ruts as I'm planning to make up some VMS mud and make a lake in each rut, then push the Kitty in and let it all ooze out. Theory being that as it dries it locks in the tracks (fingers crossed)

The ones put in are for the potential figure positions. I always like to have the figures imbedded so it doesn't look like they're floating on the surface. My thinking is the first dustings of snow have arrived so there's the opportunity to create lots of footprints

Hi All
Well I'm pleased to report that the clay has dried and with the thin layers there's minimal cracking. Will probably use a bit of fine filler on one and it will be ready for the pretty stuff.
